Vienna in Long Eaton

About

Sunday 22nd May | 11:00am - 4:00pm
Zig Zag
£8

Start/Finish: Either 10.00am Zig Zag HQ 23 Carlton Road Ng32dg (just off Sneinton Market) or 12.00pm Long Eaton Train Station.
Duration: 5 hours
Distance: 5 miles
Difficulty: easy/medium
Highlights: Massive Tenement Lace Factories; Abstract Viennese Secessionism; Edwardian Civic Grandeur; High Arts & Crafts Mansions.

Zig Zag considers Long Eaton among the most underrated places in the UK for historic buildings; a big claim, but where else can you find Viennese secessionism, art-nouveau shopfronts, giant Edwardian mansions and some of the largest tenement Victorian factory buildings anywhere to be found, all in one small provincial town? Long Eaton will surprise you. The story takes in the frenzied C19 lace boom, speculative developers and prodigious young Scottish architects inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Either join us at ZigZag HQ for a leisurely ride on a traffic free route along the river to Long Eaton or meet us at Long Eaton train Station at midday. Refreshment and lunch will be available from a great cafe next to the station.
