In celebration of International Dawn Chorus Day, join a gentle walk around Rushcliffe Country Park to hear the birds in their early morning arias, then warm up after at the visitor centre with a cup of tea! Taking place across the market town of Newark, which had a pivotal role in the English Civil War, the festival sees over 300 re-enactors descend on the town, with colourful flag flourishes, drill and musket volleys, pitched battles fought at the Queen’s Sconce, and a major living history encampment at Newark Castle.

While you’re at it, nip over to the National Civil War Centre to check out their current exhibition Cutting Edge, which looks at the changing use of weaponry throughout the ages, from cavalry and armour to more sophisticated weaponry.

Faces of Change: Votes For Women

The Workhouse | Sunday 29 April - Sunday 22 July 2018 | 12noon - 4pm

Over 35 photographs, prints, drawings and paintings from the National Portrait Gallery’s collection are currently being exhibited at The Workhouse, celebrating key figures in the national campaign for women’s suffrage. Marking 100 years since (some) women were granted the right to vote, this exhibition is just one of four around the UK, organised by the National Trust. Also on show at the museum is Struggle for Suffrage: Workhouse Women and the Vote, which uses unique textile pieces to shine a light on the stories of local women – both suffragists and those who fought to have their voices heard, in the context of this incredible building.
