Nottingham really holds its own when it comes to independent business. Down unsuspecting alleyways, in charming districts and busy shopping streets, traders decorate our city with businesses packed with passion, expert knowledge, and unique treats.

Last Saturday saw the annual It’s In Nottingham Independents Festival take over the streets, with street parties full of live music and entertainment, and a wonderful atmosphere of celebration and support for those who make the city unique. Throughout June you were asked to vote for Nottingham’s Best Independent Business 2018, and yesterday the winner was revealed, along with accolades in several other categories.

Nottingham's Best Independent Business 2018 - Bar Iberico

Another top-quality restaurant brought to us by the team behind Iberico World Tapas and World Service, in its two years Bar Iberico has already bagged a string of awards to rival even its high end sister restaurants, including Best City Centre Experience and Best International Restaurant at the 2018 Nottinghamshire Food & Drink Awards.

So, what is so special about this champion of Spanish cuisine? Let’s start with the restaurant itself. Situated on Carlton Street, Bar Iberico features some of the best alfresco seating in the city – a perfect suntrap to get you in the holiday mood and watch the world go by as you relax with wine and tasty tapas. Inside the atmosphere evolves from lively mornings serving up hearty breakfasts, to intimate dinners fit for any special occasion.

The tantalising menu features the usual Spanish delights including flatbreads, padron peppers, croquetas and charcuterie, along with more unique flavoursome dishes such as beetroot carpaccio with orange, goats cheese and walnuts, or woodfired baby squid in cider with harissa hummus. We particularly love the Menu Rapido, which serves up two tapas, plus sourdough with balsamic and olive oil for just £10.95, making it a perfectly filling lunch in you want to treat yourself.

Special Achievement Award - Weavers Independent Wine & Spirits Merchant

A special achievement award was also given to Weavers Independent Wine & Spirits Merchant. A family business with 174 years of expert knowledge under its belt, pop in to their Castle Gate shop to browse a huge range of fine wines, spirits and liqueurs, including rarities and specialist products. We have been particularly taken with their Castle Gate Gin, which is infused with botanicals and acorns from Sherwood Forest to create a distinctive and aromatic flavour. Should you want to top up your own knowledge of wines and spirits, they regularly hold tastings at their dedicated event rooms, the grand No. 17 Castle Gate, or join their wine club to have cases delivered to your door!

Attractions & Things To Do - Broadway Cinema

Scooping the Attractions & Things To Do award was Broadway Cinema, a Hockley institution which has been championing independent film for 36 years. With four screens, including one designed by Nottingham’s own Sir Paul Smith, you’ll find the quirkier side of cinema screened here, along with movie quiz nights, courses and film festivals such as October’s Mayhem Film Festival, which specialises in horror movies. A hub of culture and leisure, this isn’t just a spot for cinephiles. The café bar serves up tasty food and drink, with tempting seating outside.

Pubs, Clubs, Bars and Music Venues - The Malt Cross

It’s hard not to sing the praises of Pubs, Clubs, Bars and Music Venues winner The Malt Cross. One of the last surviving Victorian music halls in operation in the UK, this building features a stunning curved glass ceiling (reportedly held together by glue!), balcony seating, elegant period features and interesting historical snippets dotted around. The relaxed café bar – the profits of which all go to charity - offers regular events, from live music to markets, while creative workshops regularly take place in the old snooker room below. Descend below ground to find caves built when a Carmelite Friary stood on the site, which today plays host to poetry evenings, gin tastings and drum circles! To discover more about this fascinating business, go along to one of their guided heritage tours, which take place every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
