Back in 1809, Southwell girl Mary Ann Brailsford innocently planted some apple pips in her back garden, and so began the story of the first Bramley apple, star of pies and crumbles throughout the country, praised worldwide for its unique flavour and cooking qualities. Each year the picturesque town celebrates the origins of the country’s favourite cooking apple, and this year’s festivities are set to be extra special to mark the 25th anniversary of this much-loved local tradition.

Discover the original and ancient tree, which continues to bear fruit each year, still standing proud on Church Street, and find out more about its intriguing story with the Bramley apple trail or a tour around the Bramley apple orchard. As you wander through the quaint streets you’ll find cosy cafes, traditional pubs and charming shops, many with special window displays as the whole town comes together to celebrate the roots of their unique heritage.

The food and drink fair at the grand Southall Minster features over 30 stalls from some of the best small producers, cooking demonstrations, free samples and more. The fun continues with live music, Morris dancers and the traditional crowning of the Bramley king and queen. Plus there’s plenty to keep children entertained with special apple trail at The Workhouse plus crafts and activities in the archbishops palace.
