Winter Wonderland

Much to our delight, Nottingham Winter Wonderland is back, and this year things are bigger and better than ever before. The crowds turned up in their hundreds for the grand opening and Christmas lights switch-on yesterday, and we were privileged to be among them to get a first look around this incredible Christmas attraction.

We started off with a winter warmer in the Sur La Piste ski lodge-style bar and can confirm the mulled wine and alcohol-free hot apple juice are just the thing to kick off a fun, festive evening. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, once again they’re serving fresh, unpasteurised beer, which arrives directly from the oldest European distillery in the Czech Republic within 3 days – a must-try for any beer connoisseurs.

There’s a wonderful atmosphere in the spacious-yet-cosy timber lodge, with snuggly faux-fur throws throughout the numerous seating booths, each with an individual feel and gorgeous decorations. With a carefully selected programme of live entertainment planned, it’s the perfect place to start off an evening full of Christmas cheer or rest and warm up after a day hitting the shops in search of the perfect presents.

Not that finding great gifts is going to be tricky this year with the brilliant Bavarian style Christmas market. Featuring over 70 independent traders, each selected with care for the quality and variety on offer, from fashion and homeware to delicious local produce, there’s sure to be something for everyone.

After a drink or two and a wander round to take in all the festive sights and sounds, we found ourselves rather taken with the delicious scents wafting in our direction. Mouths beginning to water, we set off in search of something tasty to try and found ourselves spoilt for choice. The traditional German Bratwurst were a big hit, as were the tasty potatoes smothered in cheese from the Kartofle stand outside Sur la Piste, and for those with a sweet tooth you can’t beat fresh churros or a delicious filled crepe. A special mention goes out to Bar Iberico who are bringing their best-loved tapas dishes to Sur La Piste this year, the same great taste and quality we’ve come to expect in a fabulously festive setting.

With full bellies, we gathered round to watch the brilliant skaters take to the ice rink to show off their skills, before settling in for the big moment. Buddy, star of Elf - A Christmas Spectacular, coming to the Motorpoint Arena 28-30 December, joined our very own Sheriff of Nottingham to push the plunger this year. The Council House looks beautiful lit up against the night sky, and the fireworks ensured proceedings went off with a bang!

Bar Altitude at Nottingham Winter Wonderland

Just when we thought we’d seen all the delights on offer, we were invited into the brand-new Bar Altitude and found a comfy corner to toast to a brilliant evening. This beautifully decorated chalet is simply stunning with twinkling lights, and the glass walls give brilliant views of the festive scenes below. With a live DJ and delicious cocktails, this is set to be the perfect place to kick off a party with class this Christmas.

Winter Wonderland runs until 31 December in the Old Market Square and surrounding streets, for more information, please click here.
