With the glorious bank holiday weekend now firmly a memory and the start of September on the horizon bringing the promise of crisp autumnal evenings, now is the time to eke out those last, lazy days of summer at one of the fantastic events coming up this weekend in Nottinghamshire.

Don’t forget this weekend is your last chance to make a splash or chill by the bar at Nottingham Beach or sip cocktails by the pool and sample the tempting tapas-style dishes of Masterchef: The Professionals winner, Laurence Henry, at the Playa Day Club.

Inspiring Art Exhibitions & Theatre

Art Exhibitions in Nottinghamshire
Various Venues

The summer’s season of open-air theatre comes to close this weekend, but there’s still chance to spend an enjoyable evening taking in a performance of Sense and Sensibility in the stunning surrounds of Wollaton Hall on Saturday. This funny, fast-paced and faithful new adaptation from the critically-acclaimed Pantaloons Theatre Company features live music, audience interaction, romance and heartbreak.

This weekend is also your last chance to catch Dissident Lines at Nottingham Contemporary, a retrospective of the works of pioneering experimental filmmaker Lis Rhodes. Dissident Lines spans Rhodes’ entire career, from iconic pieces such as Dresden Dynamo and Light Music to a specially commissioned new work.

But as one exhibition closes, two more are opening this weekend. On Saturday evening the Fletcher Gate Fine Art Gallery will host the launch party for Transit by Tom Voyce. Meet the Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2017 and explore the exhibition of his colourful, abstract landscapes. The show will continue throughout September. Elsewhere on Saturday is the opening of the 23rd annual Open Exhibition at Thoresby Park giving visitors the chance to see a wide variety of works by local artists.

Also kicking off this Saturday, the D.H. Lawrence Festival celebrates the life and legacy of Nottinghamshire’s rebel writer with talks, concerts, exhibitions and other events in and around the mining town in which he was born.

Forest Bathing

Forest Bathing at Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve | Sunday 1 September  | 9.30am & 1.30pm

Felling a bit frazzled? There’s nothing like immersing yourself in nature to wind down from the stresses of daily life, restore equilibrium and reconnect with the natural world, away from the constant demands and distractions of the modern world. Have you ever heard of the Japanese art of Shinrin-yoku? This mindfulness practice and natural wellbeing therapy involves immersing the senses in the forest to tap into the therapeutic powers of the woodland.

It may sound a bit new-age, but there’s a host of scientific research which backs up the bold claims of this increasingly popular pursuit; not only does it have a measurable impact on our stress levels and mental health, it also boosts our immune system, creativity and problem-solving skills.

This weekend in the legendary Sherwood Forest you can learn all about the benefits of the practice and exercises to tap into the therapeutic powers of the woodland, as you wander the ancient oaks and take in the forest atmosphere with your expert guide. Could there be a better way to start September and a new season than with a profound sense of peace and wellbeing?
