Free days out, fantastic tours, pop-up parks, birthday celebrations and spectacular shows under the big top coming up this weekend in Nottinghamshire!

Before we get stuck in to our top five things to do this weekend, a special mention goes out to some other intriguing events which caught our eye. Over at Ye Olde Bell Hotel this Friday it’s time to dust off your flat cap and don your best 1920s attire for a Peaky Blinders themed pop-up, complete with bootleg cocktails in a bespoke underground bar, sultry singers and a deliciously authentic two-course meal. See the impressive engines in steam at one of the finest preserved Victorian Water Works in the land at Papplewick Pumping Stations’ Vintage weekend, or if you’re in need of a little comic relief there’ll be lots of laughs in store at the Castle Rock Comedy Club on Saturday.

It’s hard to believe the wonderful Nottingham Contemporary art gallery is 10 years old, but this weekend they’ll be marking a decade of amazing exhibitions and inspiring events. On Friday join them for the launch of new exhibition Still Undead - a major exhibition exploring how the pioneering Bauhaus art school has shaped British pop culture from 1920s to 1990s in a variety of unexpected ways. Be the first to see the show and enjoy live music and a party atmosphere in the café bar. The following day the celebrations will continues with a free, family-friendly birthday bash packed with fun activities and things to do, plus, of course, a rather special cake.

Roll up! Roll up! The circus is coming to town! With an international cast of over 30 artistes, Gandeys Circus is a big top spectacular direct from Hong Kong that is sure to leave you utterly dazzled. Expect awesome aerial shows and acrobatics, mind-bending contortionists, death-defying feats of skill, show-stopping West-End-style musical numbers and lots of laughs along the way at this family-friendly hit show.

England’s largest free festival of history and culture continues this weekend with free entry and events across some of Nottinghamshire’s fantastic museums and heritage attractions. Experience a thrilling actor-led re-enactment of the trial of William Saville in the National Justice Museum’s authentic Courtroom, check out the new art installation Plant Blindness in the Camellia House at Wollaton Hall, or go behind the scenes at Creswell Crags. Explore the most complete Workhouse in existence for a fascinating insight into the lives of the poorest of Victorian society or discover the fascinating Civil War heritage of Newark on a guided walk through the richly historic town.

Spectacular Elizabethan mansion Wollaton Hall certainly has a tale or two to tell and this weekend there’s a choice of tours to discover the rich history of the building. The Wollaton Hidden History Tours run daily at 12 and 2pm, allowing visitors to explore the hidden passageways and private areas, from the grand Prospect Room with it’s breath-taking rooftop views, down to underground reservoir - the Admiral’s Bath, which is dug out into the sandstone caves beneath the hall.

If you’re feeling brave, why not join a behind-the-scenes tour on Friday evening to hear tales of the curious goings on, unexplained happenings and things that go bump in the night in this haunted hot-spot and meet the ghosts Wollaton Hall.  


Car Free Day

Sunday 22 September | 12-5pm | Heathcoat Street

On the 22nd of September ditch the car and join people around the world marking Car Free Day – a global event to promote active, sustainable travel and show what a difference removing cars from urban environments can make. To mark the occasion, Heathcoat Street in the Hockley district of the city will be transformed into a free to enter pop-up park complete with plants, street art, seating and a play area full of fun games.
