With the festive frenzy of Black Friday firmly behind us this weekend we celebrate independent business across the land. Nottinghamshire is brimming with brilliant indie emporiums, bespoke bars and unique eateries to explore, so this weekend why not boycott the big brands and get a real taste of Nottingham’s independent spirit? Along with the satisfaction of supporting the local business there are extra rewards in store for those who pick up a copy of the Small Business Saturday Independent Shopping Trail. Simply collect 7 stamps or stickers from participating businesses and drop of your card at The Bead Shop to be entered into a draw to win some great prizes!

Steaming Day and Christmas Fair at Papplewick Pumping Station

Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 December | Papplewick Pumping Station

It’s full steam ahead this weekend Papplewick Pumping Station, the finest working Victorian water works in Britain. Described as a ‘feat of Victorian engineering’ this palace of steam features all of its gorgeous original fixtures and fittings, including polished mahogany, brass and stained glass. Admire the brilliant craftsmanship and ornate architecture throughout, see all of the engines in steam, and even take a tour of the underground reservoir! This weekend their regular steaming days take on a Christmassy twist, with craft and gift stalls to browse, live music to set the festive scene on both days and the chance to meet the big man in red himself at Santa's Grotto.

Tickets for tours of the Rock Cemetery catacombs often sell out weeks if not months in advance, so don’t miss this opportunity for a fascinating tour! Opened to the public for the first time earlier this year, these intriguing tunnels lie ready to be explored. After a guided walk through the cemetery where the great and good of Nottingham’s past were laid to rest, you'll go behind the bolted gates and down the dark tunnel to discover the catacombs themselves.

Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 December | Malt Cross

Cosy up in the magnificent old Victorian Musical Hall and be entertained by humorous, nostalgic and magical tales from this festive time of year performed by talented raconteurs, The Woolly Tellers. With a long history of spoken word performance, experienced storytellers Mick Waysall and Dave Brookes are bound to entertain, and we can guarantee you’ll appreciate the classic and homely nature of an evening listening to their yarns. On Saturday evening they’ll be sharing tales and stories that capture the imagination and the pure spirit of Christmas, while on Sunday afternoon they’ll be entertaining with stories full of festive nostalgia.

The annual performance of Messiah at the Royal Concert Hall, which takes place on Saturday, has become a much-loved fixture in the Christmas calendar. Exquisite solo arias such as I Know hat my Redeemer and thrilling choruses like the joyous Hallelujah come together to create a masterful, musical retelling of the biblical account of the birth, life and death of Christ, well-loved by audiences for almost three centuries. On Sunday you can take a sleigh ride through Glenn Miller's Winter Wonderland with an afternoon of big band music festive favourites. Later on in the magnificent Great Hall of Elizabethan mansion Wollaton Hall, The Mirabilé Vocal Ensemble will be performing an atmospheric candlelit concert to get you into the Christmas spirit.
