As the coronavirus situation continues to send shockwaves around the world, one of the few positives has been the outpouring of support for all those affected and the overwhelming sense of community spirit as people go to great lengths to help one another out.

Plenty of people will be wondering what they can do to support local businesses, organisations and charities in order to help them survive throughout these trying times, so we’ve put together a few ideas to get you started.

Online shopping | Visit Nottinghamshire

Support independent businesses by making online purchases

Whilst non-essential retailers have been ordered to close their doors, many of their online stores remain open for business – and after all, there’s nothing like a bit of retail therapy to cheer you up. Treat yourself to some stunning jewellery from Keishi Jewellery (use the code SENDINGLOVE10 for 10% off) or brighten your wardrobe with some clothing from ladies boutique Stick and Ribbon. You’ll be spending a lot of time in your home over the coming weeks, so why not treat yourself to a gorgeous new furniture item from Danish Homestore (they’re currently offering free storage, free UK delivery and 25% off all orders) - and if you’re lucky enough to have a garden or balcony, now is the time to revitalise it with some outdoor furnishings and furniture from The Worm that Turned and make the most of sunny days. If you need more of a creative outlet, The Bead Shop have started doing gift vouchers and their online shop is still up and running to supply all your beading needs.

Order food online

Being in self-isolation doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy some of your favourite restaurant meals at home, although be sure to ask for a no-contact delivery (where food is left on your doorstep) to protect both yourself and your delivery driver. Take a look at our blog for restaurants, cafes, food shops and breweries offering delivery in Nottingham.

Buy gift vouchers

Although many businesses aren’t currently open, you can still purchase gift vouchers to help keep them afloat and give yourself something to look forward to later on. If you’re feeling really generous you could even send something to a loved one who is currently self-isolating – imagine their joy when they get an Eden Hall Spa voucher, a Colwick Hall Afternoon Tea (use the code BEKIND for 33% off) or a Debbie Bryan Creative Class voucher pinging into their inbox.

Accept credit notes instead of refunds

We know it’s frustrating when an event you’ve been looking forward to has been cancelled or postponed, but if you are able to accept a credit note (e.g. for a future performance at Nottingham Playhouse or the Theatre Royal/Royal Concert Hall) instead of asking for a refund, this can really help them.

Donate to charitable causes

If you’re able to, now is a great time to make a charitable donation. The Robin Hood Fund will be providing support to the most vulnerable in Nottingham, whilst Creswell Crags has set up a JustGiving page to help them try to avoid permanent closure. Chefs at some of Nottingham’s top restaurants are cooking thousands of free meals for vulnerable people and NHS staff. Founded in Nottingham, the not-for-profit Open Kitchens scheme aims to raise £185,000 to get 100,000 simple and nutritious meals to those most in need. Those taking part include Yamas, Petit Paris, Bar Iberico, the Trent Navigation, The Angel and chefs at Nottingham Forest Football Club; you can donate here.

Share information on social media

We know that the coronavirus pandemic will leave a lot of people very anxious about money, and not everyone will be in a position to purchase non-essentials or make charitable donations. However, every little bit helps so if you see a cause you feel supportive of or a business you’d like to support, simply sharing their posts from your own social media account will help to raise awareness.

Leave a positive review

If you’ve experienced particularly good service in the past but never quite got round to leaving a review, now is the time to do so. Nottingham is absolutely full to bursting with businesses which go above and beyond for their customers, have super-friendly staff, or offer really great products. A glowing review from you can really help them out and brighten their day.
