Alchemilla Restaurant is located at the top of Derby Road in Nottingham and serves modern British food, with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients, especially vegetables. The menu changes depending on what is growing and what the team have foraged. Diners can choose from 10 or seven courses at dinner, plus an additional five course menu at lunch and on week nights.
Alex Bond is the head chef and owner of Alchemilla, opening the restaurant was the culmination of a long-held dream to open his own restaurant. Alex has worked with some of the UK’s best Michelin starred chefs including Sat Bains, Phil Thompson at Auberge du Lac and Richard Turner at Turners in Birmingham.
Alchemilla sits within a former Victorian coach house (which had sat unused for over a century) and has been transformed into a modern restaurant space. A brushed aluminium kitchen sits within the exposed brickwork of the original coach house arches, which have been given a new lease of life by the addition of huge skylights. The Alchemilla theme runs from the living wall alongside the front door, where the planting gives diners a taste of what is to come. The living theme continues inside where a moss wall blurs the boundaries between inside and out and a feature bookcase at the chef’s table hints at some of the many inspiration sources behind Alex’s vision. Jars of foraged sweet woodruff and elderflower sit alongside Nordic cookery books and plants.
As a keen gardener Alex is a firm believer that 99% of his ingredients should be British sourced and he often takes his team on foraging trips in the local hedgerows and fields, after which they preserve and store the ingredients to be used later in the year.
The Nyetimber Garden
The Nyetimber Garden has sprung to life at plant-based focused, fine-dining restaurant Alchemilla. Set on the roof of the converted Victorian coach house, the garden terrace is in partnership with Nyetimber, the leading producer of award-winning English sparkling wines, with vineyards across Sussex, Hampshire and Kent. Where better to take in the view atop Nottingham, affectionately known as ‘The Queen of the Midlands’, than The Nyetimber Garden, where Classic Cuvee, Cuvee Chérie Demi-Sec, Blanc de Blancs and Rosé are served by the glass and 1086 - Nyetimber’s Prestige Cuvee - will be available to enjoy by the bottle.
The terrace is designed by British artist Wolfgang Buttress - a celebrated designer best known for The Hive at Kew Gardens – raised planting beds act as a base for booth seating whilst a greenhouse also features herbs and tray vegetables as well as doubling up as an al fresco bar.
The cocktail menu gives guests a flavour of what happens in the restaurant kitchen, using a selection of ingredients which appear on the tasting menus, alongside both freshly foraged and preserved aromatics, botanicals and plants. Unique concoctions include Pisco, Fino Sherry, Salted Lemon and Shrub; Bourbon, Roasted Yeast and Butter alongside a Gin, Summer Berries and Sourdough.
Whether you begin or end an unforgettable plant-focused tasting menu experience with a couple of glasses of English sparkling wine or want to make an occasion enjoying the roof terrace atmosphere and views, make The Nyetimber Garden your must-visit place in Nottingham.
Starting 2021 in style, Alex and the team have created the Alchemilla At Home box. Simple DIY instructions will have you cooking a Michelin restaurant-quality three course meal in the comfort of your own home. Simply order online and collect from the restaurant on your chosen day (Fridays and Saturdays, subject to availability). They also have a selection of cocktails, beers and expertly paired wines to choose from and the option to add a speciality cheese.
