Carriages cafe and bar is conveniently situated in Newark Castle station - making it ideal for visitors arriving by train.  This grade II listed station was built in the Italianate style in 1846 and has been sympathetically restored to its former glory.  It is now a beautiful Victorian styled cafe and bar with chandeliers, nostalgic steampunk decor, sash windows and stone fireplaces.  Quirky contraptions and art-work bedeck the walls, which all add to a timeless nostalgia for the age of steam.

Breakfast, lunch and afternoon menus are available six days a week from 7am to 5pm.  Customers can buy a bacon roll, porridge or a sandwich (amongst many other choices) from the food hatch in the grab and go area or can sit down for a delicious meal in the elegant dining area.  Options include a hearty home-made all-day breakfast or an avocado mushroom stack with parmesan shavings and truffle oil, quiche, salads, jacket potatoes, burgers or beautiful sandwich platters made with seeded, white or gluten-free bread. Vegetarian and vegan options are offered too. After 2 pm the afternoon menu offers appetising sandwiches and cakes.

Drinks are served all day including Barista coffee, a variety of teas, Fitzpatrick‘s old-fashioned cordials, hot chocolate and Carriages is also fully licensed so if you fancy a beer, a glass of wine or a flavoured gin Carriages will be able to accommodate your wishes!

The station sits close to the picturesque River Trent and just a short distance from Newark Castle and the town centre. There is ample parking in the railway car-park or just hop on a train and leave the car behind!

Carriages’ aims are to provide a strong community environment that embraces the arts and promotes an eco-friendly ethos too. They do not sell plastic bottles and all packaging is as environmentally friendly as possible. They support Eco-Cuppa which offers 50p off every Coffee or free filtered water if you bring your own container.

Serving the community is at the heart of everything they do and Carriages runs a community kitchen every Wednesday evening from 5.30 to 7.30 that promotes social eating over a three-course meal made with supermarket surplus food.  A pay-it-forward scheme runs alongside this, enabling the community to be able to buy a meal for someone less fortunate.

Collaborative artistic events are also planned as Carriages becomes a hub for artists, writers, musicians and actors.

Packages are available to hire the building for weddings (humanist, pagan, inter-faith), wedding breakfasts, parties celebrating births, wakes celebrating lives, meetings, training events or courses. Meals or buffets are available by request.

Carriages offers delicious food and a warm welcome in beautiful surroundings.
