Winner of the Nottingham Post Food & Drink Awards 2017 - Best Cafe!
Cartwheel Café and Roastery is the vision of Alex Bitsios-Esposito. Having started work in the family coffee shop at the age of eight, Alex developed a passion for coffee and spent the last 15 years or so, learning, studying and working in different elements of the coffee trade to develop his making, tasting, training and roasting practice. Joining with chef Lee Simpson, Cartwheel draws on their combined passions for great coffee, great food and great hospitality!
Coffee
Cartwheel believe that everyone should get to experience great coffee! They know which farms their beans come from and they select them carefully to ensure they are not only ethically produced, but are grown, harvested and processed in ways that ensure the highest quality. They roast their own coffee to ensure a great tasting cup.
At the bar, Cartwheel's baristas are knowledgeable and passionate about coffee excellence. They are excited to be able to offer you a whole variety of beans to choose from, as well as brewing methods. Your coffee can take you to Colombia, Ethiopia, Kenya (changeable depending on harvests!) and you can have a cappuccino or flat white, or you can ask your barista for the syphon, or a pour-over. And, if you can’t get enough of their coffee, you can buy a bag of beans to takeaway for home brewing.
Food
Cartwheel love food and believe it should satisfy both tummies and eyes. They’ve carefully crafted a menu that not only tastes amazing, but is great for the body and looks exciting to eat. Wherever possible they source their produce locally, many of which are organic and cater for a variety of dietary requirements.
For those wishing to take their time over their breakfast or lunch they have an extensive menu, such as smashed avocado on toast, eggs and smoked salmon, sausage focaccia, superfood salads, and variety of vegan and seasonal specials. Or simply just pop in for a delicious homemade cake and coffee with friends.
Most of the dishes are available to take away if you’re short on time; it’s speedy, but they don’t scrimp on quality with beautiful breads and ingredients.
Service
Cartwheel worked hard to create an ambience of playful modernity, with a touch of the industrial! You can watch the world go by from their quirky window seat, or chill out at the back of the café in their cushioned high sofa area. And if the weather is good; they provide an extensive outside seating area on picturesque Low Pavement. Their staff are trained to bring you a friendly, laid back, full table service. You are equally welcome to come straight to the bar for takeaway, or simply to salivate over their cakes!
Evening Opening
If you’re looking for a night out; on the first Friday of the month, Cartwheel hosts Viridi; an exciting evening of a 5-6 course vegetarian taster menu. You will be surprised and enchanted by the explosion of flavor and texture, as chef Lee works his magic! Wines are optionally paired with each course by local wine merchants, Weavers.
