Strays Coffee Shop

Please note that due to the Coronavirus outbreak, Stray's is currently operating a takeout service, and will be reopening fully to the public on 4th July. Please check their Facebook page for up to date information.

Stray's is a family-owned and run business in the heart of Newark. Offering great coffee seven days a week, accompanied by a jazz soundtrack all day. You can even pop next door to Strays Bookshop to pick up something to read as you relax in the cafe.

They opened their doors in 2003 and had around 24 seats. Since then, they've grown their business to well over 100 seats across several linked buildings. They have been honing their coffee-making skills throughout this time and the business you see today is the result of an ongoing ethos of: "do it well, or don't do it..."

Serving home made breakfasts, lunches, snacks and tapas, plus mum's naughty, but extremely nice homemade cakes.

Stray's has been Jazz Central in Newark since 2003, with jazz playing all day, every day from their in house PA. They've hosted over 1,000 live jazz events every week since 2008 and continue to do so. Their current jazz programme is on the website (at the link above) with jazz every Saturday from 3pm.

Coffee is at the heart of Stray's and always has been...

It starts with a strong, nutty espresso which is not for the faint-hearted – taking between 23 and 27 seconds to extract ensures your brew is slightly bitter but not burnt or watery.
They can add or reduce how much espresso is in your drink and one of the real plus points about their family-owned and run business is that they take pride in tweaking many of their regular customers coffees to their exact specification.

"Every coffee we make, starts out with our unique blend of beans. The art is making great coffee out of these little beauties…
If you prefer your latte a little more ‘foamy’ or your cappuccino ‘dry’, we’re here to make it happen! You might want three shots in your cappuccino or some hot milk spooning onto your Americano – just let us know how you like your coffee and we’ll make sure it’s as it should be, just for you. The only limit we have is that we can't make boiling water any hotter!"
Stray's also sell teas, soft drinks and hot chocolate but their true passion is for coffee.

Their ethos today is the same as it was when they first opened. People want to pay for something they can’t get elsewhere, and it definitely has to better than can be made in their own home! That drives them to continue to provide "the best coffee you’ll have today"

Lunch anyone?

Local suppliers are used for their menu - deliveries arrive every morning of fresh bread, meats, fish and produce. Prepped each morning, your tuna mayo comes from tuna steaks, pan fried that morning; the slightly pink beef in your sandwich will have been rested for 36 hours before being cut and refrigerated.  A wide range of home-made fillings are produced each day, so your choice is whether you want your filling in a sandwich, on a jacket or a made-to-order salad? Or you could ask about their tapas - shipped from Spain, simple and very tasty - just how it should be...

Feeling Naughty?

Mum's cakes are made in the pastry kitchens on the 2nd floor of Stray's No.20 building. Many of the recipes come from co-owner Mat and Liz' mum, using Bero cookbooks and old recipes from when they were kids! Mum doesn't make the cakes any more but they're just as good as when she started, back in the early noughties. Selling 1,000's of scones each year they are known for their amazing fridge biscuit - try some when you visit and you'll see why!

Tipple anyone?

Stray's is licensed to sell bottled beers, wines, ciders and Prosecco from 12:00 noon - always a good option alongside their fabulous house burger!

"If you're coming, or thinking of coming to Newark, we'd love to be part of what makes your visit a memorable one. Maybe check out our website before you come - our full menu is available, plus some more interesting stuff about our unique family business..."
