Pilgrims & Prophets Christian Heritage Tours

About

PILGRIMS & PROPHETS is a specialist provider of historical and Christian heritage tours across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. The tours of this unique part of rural England give you the chance to explore how the men and women of these rural counties shaped the development of new nations and the Christian faith around the world.

Stretching from Boston on the coast to Lincoln, Gainsborough and the ‘Pilgrim Country’ around Retford, the area covered boasts nearly two thousand years of heritage starting from the early Christian Church, the great medieval cathedrals, moving on to Thomas Cranmer and the English Reformation, the Pilgrim Fathers, the origins of the Congregational Church, the first Baptists, the first miracles and martyrs of the Quakers, the origins of Methodism and the Salvation Army, and the modern-day churches. Pilgrims & Prophets can tell you all about the ‘Mayflower’, but can also help you understand the people and their context.

These tours are about beautiful country villages and churches, but above all they are about people and their stories. On these tours you can see where the young William Bradford grew up, sit in the seats where William Brewster inspired his friends, stand at the market cross where John Wesley preached and enjoy the romantic setting where John Robinson – the ‘pastor of the Pilgrims’ – went to woo his wife. But you’ll also meet some ‘new’ people – the Worksop vicar who wrote a book on witches, the beautiful and wealthy Countess of Warwick, and poor John Lassells who was taken from Henry VIII’s royal palace and burnt at the stake.

Pilgrims & Prophets can offer a range of ‘off the shelf’ or customised tours from half a day up to three days. Working through partners, you can book a ‘day package’ by train from London or other major cities. Pilgrims & Prophets can advise you on the best route to follow, where to stay, and even what to read; as well as the historical places, they offer some interesting ‘diversions’ like a tour of a village brewery or bargain hunting at one of Europe’s most unusual antiques markets!

Possible tours to consider include:

- The ‘Mayflower’ Pilgrims and their origins (Worksop Priory, Babworth, Scrooby church and manor, Austerfield church and manor, Gainsborough)
- The first Baptists – Smyth, Helwys and their homeland (Bilborough, Sturton, Gainsborough etc)
- American Christian Heritage tour – package of up to three days which can include the ‘Mayflower’ Pilgrims, first Baptists, John Cotton and the Massachusetts migration, Ann Hutchinson and the great controversy, Tom Paine and even Captain John Smith of Pocahontas fame!
- Hidden Treasures of the Country Churches (many little known marvels including some amazing tombs rarely visited)
- Sherwood Forest – Abbeys, Mansions and Scandals including adulterous poets and kidnapped monks
- Great Churches and Cathedrals – Worksop, Lincoln Cathedral and Stow
- John Wesley’s Homeland – Epworth church and Old Rectory Museum, including visiting his father’s tomb from which he famously preached, as well as impressive Methodist chapels

Led by a Cambridge-educated historian and respected author, Pilgrims & Prophets is a church and community-based organisation offering a unique blend of expert historical and Christian heritage guided tours, lively and interesting evening historical presentations for groups staying in the area, and the opportunity to meet and fellowship with local people if you wish. Its guides live in this area and are from this area, so have a personal connection with the stories they can share.

Guides have a passion for this subject because, spiritually, it is their own heritage; in place and faith, they are the descendants of those they talk to you about. And it can be your heritage too.
