This course will help you visualise a space, read and scale down technical drawings, and find solutions to some of the challenges of architectural model making. It's ideal for anyone interested in model making such as hobbyists and architecture professionals as well as theatre set designers, photographers and artists who'll find the skills transferrable to their own practice.
To attend this course no previous experience of model making is necessary - just plenty of enthusiasm. It's taught in NTU's model making workshops, a well-equipped, dedicated learning space run by experienced technicians.
On this course, you will:
- learn classic model making tips and techniques such as skilful scalpel use, correct material choice, accurate measuring and cutting, gluing, sculpting, vacuum forming and spray painting
- be given a directed project, drawings and all the equipment to build a simple 1:100 scale model, with its own baseboard
- complete the project from original material to a professionally finished model
- photograph your finished work using a heliodon.
What will you gain?
Upon completing this course, you'll have a unique set of skills to enable you to continue model making with confidence. The work you'll create will demonstrate how you can take your hobby or profession to a more advanced level.
Level: Beginner
Entry requirement: No experience is required.
Where you'll learn: You will be based in the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment on the City Campus.
You'll develop your project in the well-equipped model making workshop in order to create exciting work, facilitated by expert supervision from the university's workshop technicians. Based in the workshop's dark room is the state-of-the-art Heliodon, a fantastic device that accurately demonstrates the motion of the sun, aiding the design of solar responsive architecture and spaces, which you'll have access to use during your short course. You'll also have access to the library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can't reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.
Here's what previous attendees said: 'The facilities are amazing! I can't believe the resources available.' CV 'Brilliant course. A great introduction and knowledgeable tutor.'
