Third Stage - Theatre Royal
Free event, ticket required
Meet the REAL 'Greatest Showman'.
A whole century before America's P T Barnum, Sergeant-Major Philip Astley, 'late of His Majesty's Royal Regiment of Light Dragoons', gave displays of trick-riding in London in 1768 which led to the development of the art-form and entertainment familiar all over the world as 'circus'.
Actor and professional ringmaster Chris Barltrop brings his one-man play about Astley to the Theatre Royal. Meticulously-researched and hugely entertaining, this 45-minute show brings Philip Astley to rumbustious larger-than-life to tell his own fascinating story.
Premiered on the 250th anniversary of the first circus, on the very spot where that event took place, the play has toured the UK to much acclaim, including coveted five-star review ratings at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and performances at London's V & A Museum, literary festivals, and history events.
Access to the Theatre Royal Dress Circle foyer will be open from 12.15pm, and the bar will be open for refreshments, before the performance at 1pm.
Yarn Bar is also open every day from 11.30am for coffee, brunch and lunch.
