Meet the man who invented circuses!

With his wife (and bee-wrangler) as co-performer, war hero and trick-rider Phillip Astley roped off a ring in an open field in Lambeth, London, and on Easter Monday in 1768 wowed crowds with astounding displays of equestrian expertise. Building on this early success, the couple added a clown, rope-walkers and acrobats to their presentation, and the circus was born.

In Audacious Mr Astley, the REAL 'greatest showman' tells his own story and reveals his rumbustious character. Writer and actor Chris Barltrop has toured the world as a circus ringmaster for over 40 years, appearing in two Royal Variety Performances and spending seven years on tour with the legendary Moscow State Circus. His meticulously-researched one-man play draws on the writer's insider knowledge of circuses and the people who run them to recreate the larger-than-life character who started it all.

This event is free admission but booking is required due to limited capacity.
Access to the Dress Circle foyer will be open from 12.15pm, and the bar will be open for refreshments, before the performance starts at 1pm.
Yarn Bar is also open every day from 11.30am for coffee, brunch and lunch.
