Behind the Scenes at D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum

Visitors to Eastwood’s D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum will have a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes during its annual deep clean next month.

On Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th January the Museum will be offering two special behind the scenes conservation housekeeping tours, giving visitors the chance to see how museum collections are cared for, find out about the main culprits that can cause damage to items in the D.H. Lawrence Heritage collection, watch conservation housekeeping in action and even have a go at cleaning an object for themselves. 

Usually the museum would remain closed to the public for three weeks in January during the annual clean which uses specialist conservation housekeeping techniques to carefully clean each of the 1800 objects in the museum. This is essential not just for the appearance of the museum but also because dirt, dust and pests can cause objects to deteriorate over time, sometimes beyond repair.

The tour will take place at 12 noon and last approximately 1 hour. Booking is essential as places are very limited and admission is £5 per person.

The D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre on Mansfield Road will be open as usual during this time, so why not make a day of it with a visit to the Heritage Centre exhibition topped off with a vintage afternoon tea in the D.H. Lawrence Bistro (booking required).

D.H. Lawrence Heritage is a multi-award winning, two site visitor attraction in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, not far from junction 26 of the M1. The attraction brings together a museum, heritage centre, gift shop, art gallery, meeting room facility and civil wedding venue. D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre and the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum, are typically open Tuesday to Sunday (closed Monday) from 10.00am until 4.00pm (5.00pm in summer). The D.H. Lawrence Bistro, at the Heritage Centre, is open between Tuesday and Saturday from 10.00am until 4.00pm.

D.H. Lawrence Heritage will be closed for the Christmas period from 4pm on Sunday 21st December. The D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre will re-open on Friday 2 January 2015 and the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum will re-open on Tuesday 27 January 2015
