About

Bromley House Library 2018 Talks : The Vaughan Williams Affair
Bromley House Library
Wednesday 27th June | 2.00pm – 3.00pm

The composer Vaughan Williams, best known for ‘The Lark Ascending’, ‘Fantasia on a Theme’ by Thomas Tallis and nine powerful symphonies, was born in 1872, his second wife Ursula died in 2007. For twenty years, from 1938 until 1958, the lives of these two people, separated in age by two generations, by life experience and from very different backgrounds, came together.

Author Keith Alldritt has written the latest biography of the composer, ‘Vaughan Williams, Composer, Radical, Patriot – A Biography’. Janet Tennant recently published ‘Mistress and Muse – Ursula, the Second Mrs Vaughan Williams’. Together Keith and Janet will show how the lives of both Vaughan Williams and Ursula were changed by their affair, how she affected his music and he her poetry and how other relationships affected both their lives.
