About

Tours at Bromley House Library – postponed until 2020

Bromley House Library has been running tours since 2015 and they have been increasingly popular, however, due to a major building project the tours are not running until the project has finished. If you are interested in joining you can pop in and pick up a leaflet – but opportunities to view will be limited during this time.

There's a series of talks planned this year that are open to the public, you can get a glimpse of the library then and at the same time have an enjoyable afternoon. There is a link to the programme on this page in the downloads section or you can visit Bromley House Library's website or pick up the programme at the library.

A little bit of background

Bromley House was built in 1752 and has had only very minor works carried out to the fabric of the building since its construction. In 2017, Historic England agreed to part-fund work to repair the roof and deal with other structural issues around the building.

Since then, BHL have been working with their architect, Peter Rogan, to pull together a plan for the works. As well as the grant-aided repairs, BHL decided to fund a sensitive refurbishment of the entire attic floor at the same time, to create a better space for the books and members, and to give a clear narrative of the history of the attic as a photographic studio. The plan is to improve lighting levels on the second floor and improve the fire precautions around the main stairwell.

Building work starts on 1st April with the scaffolding being erected in April. You can follow the progress on their website and across their social media platforms. The whole project is expected to finish by the end of the year. There will then be plenty of opportunities to book a tour or plan a group visit. Watch this space.
