Cathy Le Surf - Nottingham Peacebuilders
Susanna Watts (1768-1842), poet, activist, bluestocking, and writer of the first ever guidebook to Leicester, took up a number of humanitarian causes. Alongside her close friends, she fought from right where she stood in life, from her home, with her wit, her pen and her undaunted courage. The causes she and her friend Elizabeth Heyrick championed, included the abolition of slavery.
Cathy Lesurf: On a writerly quest for background for 'The Ballad of Ephraim Flint' (work in progress), I discovered a wealth of fabulous characters and events, never previously encountered in my academic studies and years of interest in History. If the significance of History is to learn from it, and to have some context for a notion of who we are, then lives such as Susanna Watts' are the inspiration I look to for a sense of english-ness and womanhood.
Writer, singer, long-term member of Nottingham's creative community, C.L. began the Nottingham Peacebuilders initiative in 2017.
