This course will appeal to beginners who are less interested in traditional approaches to landscape and figure painting who want to explore their creativity through innovative practical projects.
It'll introduce you to contemporary, expressive approaches, giving you the skills and techniques to continue painting between sessions and long after the course.
The course introduces you to the world of contemporary painting, combining practical assignments with art theory in order for you to make work that challenges your thinking around colour, shape, contrast, composition, gesture and more.
You'll explore a number of themes and styles that have developed by famous artists, such as:
Abstract composition: you'll begin by abstracting and simplifying an image, photograph or still life, creating a new composition
Understanding colour: after drawing and zooming-in, you'll work with colour in a new and less naturalistic way
Realistic montage: you'll produce a range of drawings and learn how elements can be re-composed into a successful painting
The landscape of montage: you'll create monochrome scenes which, when viewed closely, will be composed of diverse shades of contrasting colours
Large op-art still life: by viewing objects through grids, you'll create totally abstract black and white paintings
Camouflage painting: you'll analyse camouflage in everyday life, where objects and figures dissolve into their environment
Simultanism: here you'll intermingle two or more images simultaneously by identifying recurring patterns.
What will I gain?
By the end of the course you will have the knowledge to think about painting in a contemporary way.
You'll have a better understanding of modern art history and how artists have created work in the past, and the inspiration to continue developing your own painting style into the future.
