The Luddites
It's 1811 – the gap between rich and poor is vast and technology is moving on. Nottingham stocking knitters are smashing their machines or frame-breaking as it was called.

The Luddites have arrived. The new wide frame can do the job of six people, which means fewer, skilled workers are needed and no work means starvation.

The Luddites become more organised and armed. They swear allegiance to the mysterious Ned Ludd: to protect their fellow Luddites on pain of death.

But the law gets tougher and frame-breaking becomes a hanging offence. Frame-breaking spreads out from Nottingham and several Luddites are executed in York.

But Nottingham doesn't escape and in 1817 Daniel Diggle was hanged in front of Shire Hall but why? Join them for their latest instalment of Crime Club on Thursday 11 November 21 to find out more.
