Course Description
This course is for future architects, designers and makers who are looking for an opportunity to gain practical, hands-on design and build experience.
You’ll learn how to design and build a small timber structure as part of a team and gain practical experience in working with wood.
On this course you’ll learn how to plan and construct a simple timber structure and gain the technical skills required to design innovative architecture.
You’ll design a structure from an architectural brief, test your ideas using small scale model-making, and then work together to construct a temporary timber structure at full scale.
During the course you will:
- Explore design ideas and processes
- Test your design ideas at a 1:20 scale using balsa wood
- Learn about the properties of timber
- Practice woodworking techniques including fixings, joints and the safe use of hand tools
- Work with others to resolve construction issues
- Be able to ask specialist technical questions related to your own ideas for future projects.
What will I gain?
You’ll leave the course with the confidence to apply your knowledge to further woodwork and architectural projects.
Level: Beginner / Intermediate
Entry requirement: You should have some experience of hand tools and power tools, and have a very basic understanding of maths or geometry.
Where you’ll learn: You will be based in the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment on the City Campus.
You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.
