Nottingham Trent University
Monday 9 - Friday 13 August 2020 | 10am - 4pm
£540
This course introduces a variety of methods to help you produce unique fabrics that display a range of properties whilst exploring the use of colour, textured structures and stitch manipulation.
It's ideal for students and practitioners who have a basic understanding of machine knitting and who wish to develop their textile design skills or experimental skills as part of a textile art practice.
This course uses Dubied handflat double-bed knitting machines, which can create a wide variety of fabrics using stitch structures such as hold stitch, tuck stitch, needle layouts, racking and selective needle use.
You'll receive instruction on hand-manipulation methods using stitch transfer in both repeat and freeform methods.
The workshops will also cover problem-solving techniques to help you become more self-sufficient after the course.
The university boasts a wide range of machine gauges, so you'll be able to choose to develop fabric weights that most suit your interest, or you can choose to experiment with a range of fabric weights for different projects.
On this course you will:
- explore how to transform design ideas into fabrics
- receive a good grounding towards developing individual textile practices for personal or commercial application
spend time on the knitting machines, starting with demonstrations of techniques with double-bed and single-bed fabrics
- use personal sketchbook development, photography and research
- be able to bring your own questions to the development of your knitted fabrics.
You will have time to develop your own structures using the methods learned, with help from the course tutor during group feedback and one-to-one sessions.
What will I gain?
You'll leave the course with a portfolio of swatches showcasing fabrics that can be developed for use in other textile design applications.
