About

Nottingham Trent University
15 - 16 July 2021, Thursday and Friday 10 am - 4 pm, two days
£195

This is not a traditional sewing course.

It begins with mark-making and drawing, and then transforms these sketches into a unique and personal collection of stitched work.

The aim is to create a catalogue of samples and a sketchbook of ideas that you can then refer to in your professional career, portfolio or for personal development.

This course will help you learn traditional hand-sewing techniques in their simplest form and apply them to different fabrics and surfaces.

It'll give you the confidence to create truly individual designs of the highest standard, experimenting with techniques in a playful, colourful way.

The course is for people with an interest in sewing who wish to explore their creativity with different ways of creating texture and patterns.

You might be an illustrator interested in making images from threads, or an interior designer interested in embellishing objects.

You might be an artist who wants to explore drawing and colour, or a graphic designer who wants to write with thread on fabric.

Some experience of sewing is a bonus but not essential, as you'll be guided step-by-step through various hand-sewing methods and applications, from basic stitches to advanced techniques.

On this course, you will:

- experiment with traditional embroidery and appliqué
- be bold and explore your imagination
- learn how to transfers ideas from paper to fabric
- enhance your fabric knowledge (basic construction, base sub straights, limitations and strengths)
- gain knowledge of basic colour theory
- explore scale in your designs
- learn about artists and designers working in this medium
- follow demonstrations and complete practical tasks
- create a sample book for referencing, and then devise your own main project
- receive one-to-one feedback.

What will I gain?

By the end of the course, you'll have developed a personal style to sewing and have samples and a larger project in development.

You'll have improved your idea generation skills, elevated your drawing technique and adopted a less rigid methodology to making work.

Level: Beginner

Entry requirement: No drawing or sewing experience is required.

Tutor profile: Having graduated from Nottingham Trent University, Mary Jeremiah's career has always involved working with fabrics and textiles.

She has worked in the commercial sector for over 20 years, gaining a wealth of experience in fabrics and garment manufacture.

Mary's career started at Courtaulds Textiles where she was a designer.

Working within the lingerie and sportswear sectors, Mary has dealt with many global brands including Nike and Adidas, and helped design the fabric for the England Football kit in 1998.

Joining Speedo International as a garment designer, Mary's knowledge of garment construction was deepened.

A successful year tutoring at Derby University gave Mary the appetite for teaching and passing on the knowledge she has gained.

Currently, Mary runs a successful wedding business dealing directly with brides, guiding them into selecting their perfect wedding dress and liaising with global designers.

However, Mary's desire and passion for embroidery has been a constant.
