Course Description
This is not a traditional sewing course.
It begins with mark-making and drawing, and then transforms these sketches into a unique and personal collection of stitched work.
The aim is to create a catalogue of samples and a sketchbook of ideas that you can then refer to in your professional career, portfolio or for personal development.
This course will help you learn traditional hand-sewing techniques in their simplest form and apply them to different fabrics and surfaces.
It’ll give you the confidence to create truly individual designs of the highest standard, experimenting with techniques in a playful, colourful way.
On this course, you will:
- Experiment with traditional embroidery and appliqué
- Be bold and explore your imagination
- Learn how to transfers ideas from paper to fabric
- Enhance your fabric knowledge (basic construction, base sub straights, limitations and strengths)
- Gain knowledge of basic colour theory
- Explore scale in your designs
- Learn about artists and designers working in this medium
- Follow demonstrations and complete practical tasks
- Create a sample book for referencing, and then devise your own main project
- Receive one-to-one feedback.
What will I gain?
By the end of the course, you’ll have developed a personal style to sewing and have samples and a larger project in development.
You’ll have improved your idea generation skills, elevated your drawing technique and adopted a less rigid methodology to making work.
Who this course is for?
The course is for people with an interest in sewing who wish to explore their creativity with different ways of creating texture and patterns.
You might be an illustrator interested in making images from threads, or an interior designer interested in embellishing objects.
You might be an artist who wants to explore drawing and colour, or a graphic designer who wants to write with thread on fabric.
Some experience of sewing is a bonus but not essential, as you’ll be guided step-by-step through various hand-sewing methods and applications, from basic stitches to advanced techniques.
Level: Beginner
Entry requirement: No drawing or sewing experience is required.
Where you'll learn: You will be based in the School of Art and Design on the City Campus.
You'll find bright drawing and painting studio and workshop spaces to develop your ideas and create exciting work.
You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.
