Nottingham Contemporary
From the 1960s, accessibility to lightweight technology allowed for new methods and pioneering changes in cinema that put filmmaking into the hands of a new generation. Inspired by underground cinema, the historical avant-garde or the new political activist cinema, independent filmmakers contributed to challenging film form. Regional production became possible across the UK as a series of workshops and film houses emerged to make and show these new films. Revisiting this legacy, Nottingham-based collective Film Free and Easy presents an evening of independent films from the East Midlands 1965 to 1985.
The programme will be accompanied by a commentary from Film Free and Easy, contextualising the conditions, aesthetic turns and period in which these films came to be made.
