Part of the REEL WOMEN series co-curated by MACE, your regional film archive, this screening offers a rare treat to watch a cinematic masterpice with LIVE music accompaniment. The screening will showcase one of the pinnacles of British silent cinema, PICCADILLY (1929) accompanied LIVE by celebrated composer and musician Stephen Horne.
PICCADILLY - a sumptuous showbiz melodrama seething with sexual and racial tension - stars Chinese-American screen goddess Anna May Wong as Shosho, a scullery maid in a fashionable London nightclub whose sensuous tabletop dance catches the eye of suave club owner Valentine Wilmot. She rises to become the toast of London and the object of his erotic obsession - to the bitter jealousy of Mabel, his former lover and star dancer (played by Ziegfield Follies star Gilda Gray).
The film will be preceded by a short programme of archive footage revealing women's lives across the Midlands over the past century now preserved by the Media Archive for Central England (MACE).
The REEL WOMEN series is co-curated by MACE and young people from across the region. It is supported by the BFI Film Audience Network as part of Changing Times: Women's Histories.
