About

Nottingham Contemporary
Wednesday 25 September 2019 | 6.30pm
£5 per ticket, or any five tickets for £20

This season, The Screen at Contemporary looks to the often overlooked, sometimes controversial and frequently subversive world of musicals where love, hate, sex and politics are played out through song, music and dance.

George Stevens, 1936.
140 Min. Cert U.

Through jazz and fevered dance, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers evoke a lost Hollywood brimming with possibility and novelty. In its radically modern aesthetic and optimistic, idealistic vision, the film looks to the future. During one number Astaire dons blackface for the song 'Bojangles of Harlem' – intended as a tribute to the African-American dancer Bill Robinson, and celebrating the black tradition of tap dance – yet today illustrates the shortcomings of cinema in genuinely representing diversity.

Tickets are available for purchase online. To book for five films, please call 0115948 9750.
