Kevin Winter, Assistant Curator at the National Civil War Centre - Newark Museum will lead a Civil War tour of Newark. Explore some of the places that were at the heart of key events, ending at the Queens Sconce.

The tour will begin at the bandstand in Newark Castle, where the reason Newark became known as 'The Key to the North' can be seen. The tour will then visit some of the buildings that played a part in the town's Civil War history and remain standing. You will get a chance to will explore some of the characters, such as Baron Dohna, Hercules Clay and Prince Rupert who were significant players in Civil War Newark.After making your way around the town you will head back to the castle to see where Scottish muskets and cannon left their mark, before heading along the river towards the Queen's Sconce. This fortification, built to defend the town from Parliamentarian attack is the best preserved 17th century earthwork in the country. The tour will take around 1,5 - 2 hours in total.

The tour will be on footpaths around the town and out to the Queens Sconce. Mobility scooters could be used during the tour and most of the tour is suitable for wheelchair users, apart from access to the upper floors of the Governor's House and access onto the Queens Sconce on arrival at Sconce & Devon Park.
