The Workhouse, Southwell
Free Event, No booking required
War Poetry Festival
The Workhouse poetry festival this year will focus on war poetry from WW1 including poetry from men and women.
The poems on display will be discovered within the walls of the main house, the men's able-bodied and infirm exercise yards, and the gardens, so that visitors can make their own journey within The Workhouse rooms 'speaking' the lives they shaped over the centuries, reaching through to contemporary issues of homelessness, flight and dispossession in wartime. We hope that the affecting and fascinating presence of the buildings will prompt conversations and encourage visitors to participate by writing what they believe they would carry with them if they were fleeing their home and seeking refuge. We would love people to attach these to a structure and create a 'tree' of their ideas on luggage labels in the learning room
