About

D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum

Food…it means so much too so many; your favourite meal, your comfort food.

How do you store these recipes? On a scrap of paper, in a book passed down and adapted by generations of your family or just in your head?

In February and March of 2019 children and adults from across Nottinghamshire came together alongside a storyteller, an artist and an archaeologist to delve into Nottinghamshire's archives. During a series of workshops they reminisced about sweets of the past and the recipes that mean the most to them. Most importantly, they shared their own family food stories and precious recipes.

The result of this fantastic collaboration, put on by Inspire Libraries and Nottinghamshire County Council with a funding grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, was a series of tea towels. Each tea towel represents an element of Nottinghamshire's history through a medium close to all our hearts…recipes! Visit during museum opening hours Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 4pm and discover the recipes that have inspired generations.

Each week a recipe from the exhibition will be available for visitors to collect and take home to try for themselves.

Then on Saturday 18th March from 1pm-3:30pm come and see how the professionals do it. A local baker has agreed to make some of the sweet treats from the exhibition and this FREE event will allow you to come and try them.
