Escape artist, fortune-teller, author, raconteur "Ironfoot Jack," aka Jack Rudolph Neave (1881–1959), the self-styled "King of the Bohemians," was a well-known pre- and post-war Soho character. His autobiography The Surrender of Silence, about a lifestyle now gone forever, was dictated as his portrait was being painted in 1956 by artist Timothy Whidborne. It describes his life with gypsies, on the streets of Soho and Fitzrovia, many exploits, including establishing The Caravan Club in 1934, considered the first gay-friendly nightclub in London.
Colin is the bibliographer of the Leicester-born philosopher and author Colin Wilson (1931-2013) and the founder of his archive at the University of Nottingham. His illustrated talk will outline Jack's remarkable life and explain how his autobiography was discovered, in 2016, among Wilson's papers, and published in 2017 by Strange Attractor Press.
