Courses that explore creative forms of non-fiction are few and far between.
However, it's one of the most up-and-coming forms of writing in contemporary literature and some of the most talked-about books from the last few years have been works of creative non-fiction: The Outrun, The Lonely City, The Last Act of Love, So Sad Today, The Argonauts, White Girls, Between The World And Me, Men Explain Things To Me and more.
This course will act as an introduction, focusing on the different forms of non-fiction, such as life writing, place writing, memoir, personal essays, lyric essays, travel writing and literary journalism.
The course is for anyone interested in developing different forms of non-fiction.
You might be a beginner, a graduate of creative writing, a journalist or a copywriter – in fact, anyone who is looking to explore different forms of writing will find this course beneficial.
It will offer practical exercises and discussions, punctuated with group readings and collective analysis, of important creative non-fiction texts.
On this course you will:
- learn how to find a story
- explore creativity through writing about place
- write about a significant moment in your life
- complete short writing 'workouts'
- identify creative non-fiction prompts for your work
- learn how and where creative non-fiction gets published - and how to pitch an idea.
What will I gain?
You'll leave this course with a robust understanding of the different forms of creative non-fiction, and an understanding of how to begin a new piece of work.
It'll ultimately improve any writer's CV and form the basis of how to transfer existing creative and writing skills into a non-fiction mode.

Entry requirement: No experience is required.
Tutor Profile: Lara Williams is a writer based in Manchester.
Her debut short story collection Treats was published by Freight Books, and has been shortlisted for the Republic of Consciousness Prize, the Edinburgh First Book Award and the Saboteur Award, and longlisted for the Edge Hill Short Story Prize.
A story from the collection has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and another will appear in the Best British Short Stories 2017 anthology.
Lara has written journalism, non-fiction, essays and criticism for The Guardian, The Independent, the Times Literary Supplement, The New European, Vice, Munchies, The Debrief, Grazia, Somesuch Stories, the New Scientist, i Paper, The Skinny, NME and many more.
She is an associate lecturer in Creative Writing and Journalism at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Lara has performed at the Edinburgh Book Festival, Aye Write, The Anthony Burgess Centre, The Whitworth Art Gallery and numerous universities and book shops.
