Chinese brush painting began around 4000BC and has developed continuously over six thousand years, its growth reflective of changes in time and social conditions. In early stages Chinese painting was related closely to other crafts from pottery to the decorative inscriptions on bronzes, carved jade and lacquerware. Flower and bird painting separated from decorative arts around the 9th century, becoming an independent genre during the Song Dynasty, often focusing on plum blossoms, bamboo, and chrysanthemums. All scrolls on display are available for sale and were created by Jiang Hongsheng, winner of a National Golden Prize for Chinese painting and Founder of the Red Peony Academy, Ningbo.
