About

The Nottinghamshire Deaf Society (NDS) is celebrating its 125th anniversary with a year-long calendar of events with its local community to help raise funds. The celebrations kick off with a “Love your British Sign Language” event in Old Market Square on Saturday 14th February 10am – 2.00pm. Members of the Deaf community will be encouraging the people of Nottingham to learn a few basic signs get the campaign off the ground. Meet us in the in Old Market Square to celebrate Valentine’s Day, and we will introduce you to some basic signs in British Sign Language; then you will be able to communicate l’amour to your family and friends in a new and surprising way!
The aim is to raise £125,000 this year to look after its building and ensure NDS can continue to deliver huge benefits to the deaf community in Nottingham for years to come.
This year we will have the opportunity of celebrating and sharing the wonderful history and rich culture of the deaf community. We will be holding a series of vibrant fund-raising events to celebrate and acknowledge the people whose invaluable support has contributed to making our organisation what it is today.
NDS is a valuable resource to deaf people in Nottinghamshire, the society has an enviable reputation for the work it does and we want to promote an inclusive community in which all deaf people can fully participate.”
We do receive some grants and funds from services we deliver – such as sign language training – to organisations outside. But a lot of the work we do needs donations from people the NDS. Without those donations, we simply wouldn’t survive. The society also runs BSL interpreting services, enabling more than 2000 Deaf users and hearing service providers to communicate effectively. It also runs a registered UK-online centre providing deaf people with internet access to support their everyday lives.
