Mass Production Part 2

About

Thursday 6 - Sunday 16 October 2016

Arts & Crafts at Malt Cross presents Mass Production Pt.2, the second half of a two part exhibition exploring the modern and historical crossover of craft and industry in the Midlands.

The two group shows examine the materiality, museology and sociopolitics of craft industries – whilst harking back to the former use of the Malt Cross as a Victorian Music Hall, a leisure site for craft laborers and factory-workers.

Works by a selection of UK-based artists explore the contrast between craft as a selftaught hobby and a generational tradition, the rise of the Luddites, and the transition from the ornately hand-produced to the machine-made kitsch. In 2014 the Malt Cross received Heritage Lottery Funding to open a below ground workshop and gallery to support artists and makers and provide opportunities for the general public to learn more about Arts & Crafts. Mass Production Pt. 2 will take place over two floors beneath the Malt Cross, in our gallery and workshop space.

To coincide with the exhibition Arts & Crafts at Malt Cross will host a programme of related events. For further details on the programme please visit maltcross.com/events
