Metalwork Sculpture for Beginners - Short Course at NTU

About

14th - 18th August | 2023 | Monday to Friday 10 am – 4 pm, one week
Nottingham Trent University
£695

Metal has many unique qualities - its attributes of strength, delicacy, malleability and toughness have led to its use across many art and design disciplines.

On this course, you'll be introduced to different metals and the techniques used to work them into sculptural pieces.

It's ideal for anyone who would like to use metal to explore their artistic vision, enabling you to learn the skills needed to create your own art.

On this practical course, you'll explore different metals and their properties, as well as the tools needed to work each metal and use them safely.

You'll investigate sculptural form, line and structure, and the specific qualities that different metals have so that you can take advantage of their mechanical strengths.

You'll start by exploring how to turn drawings into 3D artworks, and then get straight into metalworking, creating maquettes (test pieces) using the techniques you've learnt.

Using these maquettes, you'll develop your metalworking skills to see how they can be applied to produce a complete sculpture in metal by the end of the course.

During the course you will:
•    turn drawings and concepts into 3D artworks
•    be introduced to materials and tools and learn how to use them safely and effectively
•    consider the sculptural properties of different metals
•    use heat to anneal and shape metals
•    practise metal cutting methods
•    learn how to form the metal by bending, twisting, raising and folding
•    use a variety of joining techniques including riveting, bolting, soldering and welding
•    learn about the history of metal in sculpture and craft
•    think about form and function and the practical applications of metal
•    find out how to source materials
•    build your confidence in using hand tools and metalworking equipment
•    explore different techniques that will make your sculpture truly unique.

You'll be introduced to techniques through group demonstrations, samples, paper-based instructions, and one-to-one feedback as your project develops.

What will I gain?
By the end of the course, you'll have a thorough understanding of the different metal workshop processes.  You'll also have created your own original sculpture in metal that shows how you have applied these processes. You will also leave with the confidence to develop your skills and apply your knowledge to further metalworking projects.

Level: Beginner.

Entry requirement: No prior metalworking experience is necessary as you'll be guided through the different processes to create your own piece of sculpture by our experienced tutor.

Where you'll learn:
You'll be based in the School of Art and Design on the City Campus. You'll receive training and advice on how to fully utilise the equipment in our specialist metal workshop. You'll also have access to the NTU library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can't reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.
