News As Art: Telling a Richer Story - Short Course at NTU

About

Nottingham Trent University
24 - 31 October 2020, Saturdays 10 am - 4pm
£190

On this two-day course, you'll explore the link between news and artistic representation: how artists tell the news in their work and how we can represent ourselves and our histories.

You will ask:

Is there a link between the things we think matter and the way our lives, issues and histories appear in the news?

What happens if local people begin to make artwork about things they feel are important?

Is there a new form of local media and communication?

During this course, you'll explore ideas of art and the space between word and image.

You'll define and complete a project that expresses something that you feel is newsworthy using art, print, collage, imagination and life experience.

This might be a simple idea or something much bigger.

It's also an opportunity to challenge the news through colour, line and texture, and to investigate what you're drawn to about a subject.

On this course, you will:

- look at poster, propaganda and graffiti art
- complete guided exercises that explore form, colour and texture
- learn about art and communication
- create your own brief and produce your own pieces in art form
- develop further ideas for projects to continue working on after the course.

What will I gain?

By the end of the course, you'll have created new artwork that is inspired by your vision of the world around you.

You'll have ideas around narrative and communication, and feel part of a community of artists interested in sharing their work.

Level: Open to all

Entry requirement: You should have an interest in news, communication, asking questions and looking for new ways of communicating answers, questions and content.

Tutor profile: Paula Sharratt was educated at the University of Nottingham, and then went on to study art and sculpture in Nottingham and at DeMontfort University.

She has worked in marketing, teaching and as a developer of community newspapers in West Bridgford and Clifton.

Paula typically works in oils, pastels, print and charcoal.
