Nottingham's Townhouses: A Talk by Peter Smith

About

Tuesday 20th February 2018 - Talk will begin at 7pm

This talk will explore the history of a number of townhouses built and still surviving in Nottingham that were constructed between 1650 and 1800.

Nottingham in the 18th century was considered to be one of the most attractive towns in England.  For example, Daniel Defoe described it in 1726 as "one of the most beautiful towns in England."

All this changed during the 19th century with the impact of the Industrial Revolution, though today a surprisingly large number of the townhouses built for the town's merchants and gentlemen still survive.

Using these examples Peter will explore how the design of these residences changed during the period.
