The University of Nottingham Museum at Nottingham Lakeside Arts opens a new exhibition showcasing archaeological finds from across Nottinghamshire that have been found by members of the public.
For the exhibition, the University of Nottingham Museum has partnered with the Portable Antiquities Scheme, a national project across England and Wales that records objects found by the public. Since 1997, 1.4 million artefacts have been recorded, 15,000 of them in Nottinghamshire. These include objects found by metal detectorists, people gardening and farming and by chance. All artefacts are put onto an online national database which is accessible to everyone.
The new exhibition displays some of the objects found in Nottinghamshire and examines the new and exciting information that they can provide about everyday life in the past. The oldest object on display is a 6000 year old stone axe head and the most recent is a 200 year old lead cockerel used in the game of cockshies.
Nottinghamshire Unearthed is on display until 27 January at the University of Nottingham Museum at Nottingham Lakeside Arts. Anyone who has found an artefact can have it identified and recorded at the Museum on the third Tuesday of each month between 11am and 5pm.
