Open Studios Notts

About

Open Studios Notts, in its eighth year, is a series of linked events organised and run by artists & makers across Nottinghamshire and Nottingham over 6 weeks through May and early June, and supported by exhibitions of studio imagery at Retford, Mansfield Central and Beeston libraries.

This year, over 250 creative practitioners are involved at 64 venues. About half of these are in small events - many opening their studios directly to the public, sometimes as part of a cluster or trail and often with guest artists/makers at the studio, others grouped together to set up temporary ‘workspace’ venues. The events are an opportunity for artists & makers to meet the public, to talk about their work and, wherever possible, to demonstrate or illustrate something of their rich variety of creative practice. Demonstrations, activities and mini-workshops are often part of the events, ranging from have-a-go studio techniques with individual artists/makers to kiln-firing and raku sessions. Events include two larger arts trails: the Lady Bay Arts Trail on 18-19 May, in its 24th year, has 30 trail venues involving local and guest artists in studios and homes alongside community arts projects with creative displays in gardens plus free workshops; the ABC Art Trail on 1-2 June, in its 4th year, showcases work by up to 30 artists across Attenborough, Beeston & Chilwell.

Many artists work professionally and full time, often selling their work through galleries and other outlets. Others are part-time, semi-professional or amateur artists. Some work with a community focus – producing work for or with community groups. Work being shown includes paintings, sculpture, ceramics, furniture, metalwork, jewellery, textiles, illustration, woodwork, photography and more. Many of the works will be for sale and most of the artists are happy to undertake commissions and to receive visitors by arrangement outside the open studio events – contact details are given under each artist’s entry.

The linked exhibitions run from 27 April to 6 June at Retford, Mansfield Central & Beeston Libraries showing photographs of OSNotts artists & craftspeople at work in their studios & work spaces, alongside event information – The photographs are by Neil Pledger and the exhibitions are courtesy of Inspire: Culture, Learning and Libraries. Admission is free.

Details of events are listed online (website link at the top of this page) and a printed brochure can be downloaded or collected from libraries and Nottingham Tourism Centre. Most events are free - a few make a small entry charge to help cover their costs. Many offer refreshments or are near to one or more of Nottinghamshire’s wide range of café’s and pubs.

We hope you enjoy visiting, meeting with and viewing the work of this sample of Nottinghamshire’s rich pool of creative talent.
