Nottingham is a vibrant city with a rich heritage; Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest, Nottingham Castle all make this the ideal place to learn about heritage through the lens of your camera.

This course will teach you the necessary skills to capture the identity of a place in your photographs.

It's ideal for students from all disciplines; from beginners to more experienced students, with an interest in history and heritage or art and design.

Heritage in photography is something many people can relate to, making it an accessible form of photographic practice.

But being able to capture a unique image using specialist equipment is a real skill, and which sets accomplished photographers aside from others.

This practical course will appeal to anyone interested in the heritage and photography and how the aesthetic qualities of landmarks can be captured in a photograph.

You'll approach architecture and photography from both an editorial and fine art perspective, giving your work a breadth of content that will appeal to a range of audiences.

You'll explore local sites of cultural and visual importance and learn how to capture and communicate your experience of these places through making pictures.

You'll discover a variety techniques and methods for making photographs, and then sequence them together to express a personal experience.

On this course, you will:

- improve your understanding of digital photography and the manual settings of your camera
- explore Nottingham and the history and heritage of its surrounding areas through photography
- discuss the work of professional photographers and how they may inform the direction your work takes
- experience working in a variety of urban locations, capturing the external and internal qualities of historic and contemporary buildings
- experiment with abstract shapes, colours and textures
- use Raw processing and Photoshop to enhance and manipulate your images
- develop a personal style to your photography
- print your own photographs in a darkroom
- create inspiring images that have both an aesthetic and technical quality
- make a short zine of your work using InDesign.

This course is also part of the NTU Global Summer School which attracts undergraduate students from colleges around the world.

What will you gain?

By the end of the course, you'll have a portfolio of unique images, the knowledge and experience of how to plan a shoot on location, and ideas about how to continue your photography in the future.

Level: Beginner

Entry requirement: You should have some knowledge of using your digital camera in manual mode.

Where you'll learn: You will be based in the School of Art and Design on the City Campus.

You'll find full-size photography studios, darkrooms and comprehensive Mac editing suites with software for photography editing including Adobe Creative Cloud.

You'll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can't reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Tutor profile: George Miles is a senior lecturer in the photography department at NTU.

He enjoys seeing and understanding the world through a camera and is interested in working with students that wish to engage with the process of making pictures to ask questions about the world, themselves, and the medium itself.

George has published numerous photobooks and his pictures have been exhibited internationally.
