Playground - A New Performance Festival

About

Nottingham Playhouse is pleased to announce Playground, our new performance festival for artists, makers and theatre companies based in Nottinghamshire, running from Monday 2 -Saturday 7 October 2017.

Playground will be an exciting week; a celebration of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire’s diverse and vibrant theatre community.

Performances include:

The War On Terry | Monday 2 October 2017 at 7.45pm

“My girlfriend thinks I’m obsessed with death. Well maybe I am, but only as much as the next rotting sack of bones.”

It’s Terry’s birthday, but living with your parents at his age isn’t exactly a recipe for fun. At 27, Terry is now, and forever more, older than his older brother Danny, who killed himself three years before.

Terry reminisces over their childhood, whilst fighting to come to terms with his regrets over how things could have been different. What’s more, he may have just murdered 300 ladybirds. A darkly comic monologue about boys, Christmas socks and not growing up.

Directed by Hugh Dichmont
Performed by Steve Conlin

Mother Pearl | Tuesday 3 October 2017 at 7.45pm

Mother Pearl hankers after being back-a-yard in Jamaica but in the mean time has to make the most of her life in Britain. The trouble is she has a lot of stuff to get off her chest and she’s not the type to hold back. Television programmes, lottery winner Bertha, buses, Blackpool, stripograms and dem damn disco- tecks all come under fire from this feisty female. And don’t get she started on sanitary towels.

With musical support from a live reggae combo resident in her living room, she dispenses Pearls of motherly wisdom whether you want to hear them or not. So hush ya mout’ and listen up!

Guts | Wednesday 4 October at 7.45pm

The pouring sweat. Adrenaline. Heavy breath. Grunts, as you force fists into flesh.

Billy has been training for this fight his whole life. Everyone says he’s the next Amir Khan. He’s gotwhat it takes to become a star. His mum’s already planning the extensions: the one for the kitchen and the ones for her hair. Gotta have posh locks if your son’s a celeb. Everyone guessed his name would make headlines, and they were right…

GUTS follows the hopes and dreams of a boy who died on the pavement outside the Victoria Centre one Friday night.

The Black Cat | Thursday 5 October 2017 at 7.45pm

A renegade retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s twisted tale.

Two performers dismember the process of adaptation by re-imagining a macabre classic with the cheekiest of glints in their eyes.

An enigmatic writer has adapted Poe’s original story and handed scripts over to two performers who are now taking merciless liberties with the words – like a madman taking out a furious rage on a helpless pet.

Balanced between the hilarious and the horrific, this show revels in the darkness that hides just under the surface.

The Black Cat is gravely good fun, but be warned: it will get catty. Meow.

Vulva La Revolution | Friday 6 October 2017 at 7.45pm

Did you know that for every man in Nottingham, there are 412 women? Making Notts men a great resource for meeting more interesting women they’ve also slept with. But regardless of figures, numerical or physical, Major Labia want you to join us in celebrating wonder women of Notts throughout the ages.

Major Labia are graduates and associates of the BAFTA award-winning Television Workshop, and bloody funny ones at that. Vulva La Revolution is a frank frolic about life, love and labia.

Audience reactions include, “A bit too rude, really” – one of our Nanas. Get yer sens to Playhaas. #laughyourvagoff

Celluloid Souls | Saturday 7 October 2017 at 7.45pm

Celluloid Souls is an interactive and unique digital performance experience exploring our obsession with the cinema. Using live film and pre-recorded material the performers cross the celluloid divide.

Zoo Indigo use audience contributions to create a tailor-made multi media performance, including re-enactments of the spectators’ favourite films, and memories related to the cinema. The performance humorously challenges gender representation in different movie genres, with a delicious assortment of cross-dressing, miscellaneous costumes, make up, and fake moustaches.
