Poetry, Landscape and Radicals

Part of the Nottingham Festival of Words; Poetry, Landscape and Radicals includes three events at the home of one of England's most celebrated poets - Lord Byron. Performances include:

Love of Landscape, 5pm - 5.40pm

Aly Stoneman (LeftLion Poetry Editor) introduces a celebration of contemporary landscape poetry in the East Midlands and elsewhere with readings from Longbarrow Press writers Matthew Clegg, Chris Jones and East Midlands Book Award winner Mark Goodwin. The event will include audio/visual material and a discussion about traditional and experimental landscape writing in which the audience will be invited to participate.

Byron, the first rock star? 5.40pm - 6.20pm

200 years after Byron made his maiden speech in Parliament (in support of the Luddites) and 200 years since the publication of his Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, Christy Fearn suggests he was the first rock star, with a lifestyle to match - as well as being an inspiration for modern rock stars.

Christy has given talks about Byron, Shelley and Coleridge as part of Lowdham Book Festival and the International Byron Society Festival and has written a novel, Framed, about the Nottingham Framebreakers. A self-confessed ‘Byron Nut’, Christy has a tattoo portrait of her hero on her shoulder, including a line of his poetry.

Radically Good Poetry

Unfashionable, satirical, left-field and left-wing poetry from Smokestack Books, including readings by Mike Wilson, NS Thompson and Smokestack editor Andy Croft. They will also be reading from Donny Johnny, their forthcoming epic tribute to Byron’s Don Juan.
