Quartet Com Alma take their name from the Dizzy Gillespie composition Con Alma. Exploring the breadth of latin jazz, this piano quartet play the music of, and take inspiration from the likes of Ahmad Jamal, Chick Corea, The Jazz Crusaders, Paul Gonsalves, Tania Maria and Ray Bryant. Whether cooking on Cubano Chant, relaxing on Poinciana or grooving on Come With Me, this music is always performed Con Alma..."with soul"...
For this performance, the quartet will focus on the music of "Tom" Jobim and other jazz composers from Brazil such as Jorge Ben, Sergio Mendes and Tenorio Junior.
It has been said that Antonio Carlos Jobim was the George Gershwin of Brazil—and there is a solid ring of truth in that, for both contributed large bodies of songs to the jazz repertoire, both expanded their reach into the concert hall, and both tend to symbolize their countries in the eyes of the rest of the world. With their gracefully urbane, sensuously aching melodies and harmonies, Jobim's songs gave jazz musicians in the 1960s a quiet, strikingly original alternative to their traditional Tin Pan Alley source.
Expect to hear classic bossa nova like Wave, Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars), samba popularised by Sergio Mendes- Mas Que Nada, as well as some of our lesser known favourites such as Favela, Nebulosa and Casa Forte
