Choralpassion presents the Passion setting of 1933 by Hugo Distler. Here is a rare opportunity to hear this dramatic work, with English subtitles, and presented in a semi-staged performance with lighting. Lasting around 45 minutes, Distler’s succinct masterpiece uses chorus and soloists in traditional roles – all unaccompanied – and is divided into 7 scenes, each closed by a variation on the Chorale Jesu, deine Passion. As in the Bach Passions, the chorus plays many roles – both of the groups involved in the narration, and also as observer in the chorales, through which our responsibility for the Crucifixion is acknowledged.
Like many composers of his time, Distler was greatly influenced by music of a former age – in particular, Heinrich Schütz, whose huge output of glorious polyphony is represented in the first half.
