Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry's Songs of Farewell

Director: Richard Roddis

Completed in his last years, Parry's swansong is a work of great beauty and profundity - qualities which belie the composer's consummate skill, especially in word-setting. Embracing both sacred and secular choral songs, 'Songs of Farewell' explores themes of transience and leave-taking. One or two are fairly well-known, eg My soul, there is a country, but the larger-scale, more complex later songs are rarely done. After the first two in four parts, each one adds another voice until the sixth, Lord, let me know mine end, which is for sumptuous double-choir and lasts about 11 minutes.

Interspersed among them are sumptuous settings of the Nunc Dimittis by Gretchaninov and Parry's pupil, Gustav Holst, other settings of Parry's texts by Campion and Greene, another John Donne setting by William Harris, and songs of transience in nature.
