Pianist for The Halle

Wednesday 5 June | 7.30pm
Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall
Tickets: £10 - £35.50

Our final concert brings a line-up of Germanic giants, an eagerly-anticipated return from Britain's greatest young pianist, and a grandstand finish. Mozart's opera, The Escape from the Harem, reflects the interest amongst composers at the time in the "Near East". The opera's overture, complete with Turkish percussion, is a lively example. Beethoven's so-called Second Piano Concerto was actually his First, the composer beginning it in 1789, its cheerful demeanour bearing the influence of both Haydn and Mozart. The prodigiously-talented Benjamin Grosvenor, now a firm favourite amongst Nottingham audiences, is our soloist. Mahler's First Symphony provides the perfect spectacle for a season finale, even if the composer himself was initially unsure what kind of piece it was. Inspired by Songs of a Wayfarer, Mahler embarks on an evocative journey, taking in bird song, military fanfares, Viennese café music, a funereal version of Frères Jacques and a stomping country dance. The finale, launched by a flash of lightning and ending with all seven French horns on their feet, is unashamedly triumphant.

Pre-concert talk, 6.30pm in the auditorium: Neil Bennison introduces the 2019-2020 programme.
