Join geologist Dr Tony Waltham for a talk revealing the secrets of the sandstone caves of Nottingham.

During the last thousand years, hundreds of caves have been cut into the Nottingham Castle Sandstone (part of the Triassic Sherwood Sandstone) beneath the area now occupied by the city centre.

Some caves cut into steep cliff faces were used as dwellings, and just a few were cut as underground passages. But most were cut as basements beneath or behind buildings to create added work or storage space, even though not reached by daylight. They were used as grain stores, wine cellars, pub beer cellars, malt kilns, workshops, tanneries, stables and air raid shelters.

A few more were excavated simply as mines to extract clean sand. Many of the older caves were subsequently adapted for various phases of contrasting use. The surviving caves now form a valuable part of Nottingham's cultural heritage, and teams of amateur archaeologists continue to reveal more historical information as they unearth new caves.

Dr Tony Waltham was a lecturer in engineering geology at Nottingham Trent University until his retirement, and has written the standard book on the city’s caves.

In celebration of Nottingham’s 800 caves, #CaveCity invites you to explore this mysterious terrain which has lain beneath the city for hundreds of years. With tours, talks, activities and experiences throughout the city, including some of the city's lesser known cave locations, please visit the Cave City: Nottingham Underground Festival page for a full list of events, or check out the festival itinerary to plan your weekend
