About

The Siege - Nottingham Playhouse, Wednesday 10 & Thursday 11 June 2015 at 8pm

May 2002. Spring in Bethlehem. A group of armed men seek sanctuary in one of the world’s holiest sites as the Israeli army closes in with helicopters, tanks and snipers. Along with the fighters are some 200 priests, nuns and civilians. The siege lasts for 39 days, paralysing the centre of Bethlehem and keeping tens of thousands under curfew.

In the spring of 2015, The Freedom Theatre from Jenin Refugee Camp, Palestine, will embark on its first-ever UK tour with The Siege. It is inspired by the true stories of a group of fighters, now exiled across Europe, who during the summer of 2002, became leading actors in an event that with time has taken on almost mythical proportions.

The Freedom Theatre is one of Palestine’s leading cultural centres with the first professional theatre school in the West Bank and acclaimed theatre productions that tour locally and internationally. It has been described as one of the world’s most revolutionary artistic platforms, with cultural resistance at the core of all its work.

The Siege will be performed in English and Arabic (with English surtitles).
